For the Love of Facebook

By | source: Sep 13th, 2011

Facebook, one of the social media crazes of our generation, is one of the outlets in which we create an online presence. And as with our reality, online lives can get complicated and messy. With the majority of Facebook users being late teens, early adults, our busy social and personal lives are being put online through these profiles. While it all seems like fun and games, we hardly ever think about how these online profiles affect ourselves and our relationships.

Self esteem and social adjustment are generally seen to be increased by Facebook, due to social interaction and a space to create a presence and voice for oneself. It can be detrimental, however, when users begin checking their own profile constantly and there can be negative effects on your etiquette, mood, contacts and and worrying about updates.

Facebook also impacts romantic relationships. Yes Facebook is a place to “officially” proclaim your love, a place to potentially meet new partners, but it is also a place that can harm your relationship. Jealousy and insecurities can be fostered by seeing communication between your partner and another person and it can keep you attached to past lovers by keeping up with their activity or allowing them to see or post on your profile.

All in all, while Facebook is a good place to connect with friends and family, creating a healthy balance will let you be able to have a happy online presence.
