Between the bright and action-packed pages of a comic book come various color palettes. Today we will take a look at what these color palettes mean.
Today’s infographic focuses on color palettes in comic books and their meaning. In art mediums, it’s common for certain colors to represent certain things, and this is no different with comic books.
The most traditional color scheme in comic books is black vs white, with the darker colors usually symbolizing evil. Over time, this has evolved to include far more colors.
For instance, heroes traditionally stick to colors like blue, bright red, and white. This is evident when seeing characters like Spider-Man, Superman, and Captain America. On the flip side of the spectrum, villains often wear colors like blood red, purple, and black. Villains like the Green Goblin and Venom follow these guidelines well. Right in the middle are the neutral colors, often being black, white, orange, purple, and gray.
As with anything, however, there are always exceptions. Sometimes artists subvert our expectations by assigning characters a color that is not in line with their values.
The infographic also includes some information on the two major comic book companies, DC and Marvel. There are few interesting takeaways. For instance, DC tends to have darker colors on their covers while the inside tends to be brighter than Marvel overall.
