Plastic pollution has become a serious issue, and one that is getting more attention than ever before. Global citizens are starting to take notice of the enormous amount of plastic waste in our oceans, rivers, lakes and other waterways — which is causing harm to wildlife while also making humans sick. While most people know that China is responsible for much of this pollution, they may not realize that there are other countries that contribute significantly as well. India is the second largest contributor of plastic waste into oceans after China (the United States ranks at number five). In fact, if you live anywhere in Asia it’s likely your home country contributes some degree of ocean plastic waste as well. So let’s take a look at what nations produce most plastic waste and how much ocean dumping occurs from each one:

Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam also made the list of top 10 contributors to ocean pollution by plastic waste. Its waste management system is not very good, which means that much of its plastic waste ends up in oceans instead of being recycled or properly disposed of. India is another major contributor to ocean plastic pollution because of its large population and high level of consumption; however, unlike China it does have better waste management systems in place and has made efforts to reduce plastic pollution through bans on single-use bags (although these bans aren’t always enforced).
