Fifty Million boxes of Thin Mint Girl Scout Cookies are sold every year. To me… Maybe not just me, but I try to eat as many as possible. By selling over 700 million dollars worth of cookies last year, the Girl Scouts are one serious booming business.
Some Girl Scout use the money from selling cookies for long trips to locations thousands of miles away. In 2008, a girl in Michigan raised $14,000 for her troop to go on a 10 day tour of europe! That’s some real cash. The Girl Scouts have always had business in mind. In the 1930’s the girls sold home-baked goods and started commercializing in the 50’s. Over 10 different kinds of cookies have been discontinued with only two bakery companies in the United States Licensed to bake Girl Scout Cookies.
Some argue these cookies are fattening America’s youth. The Girl Scouts encourage eating the cookies in moderation along with regular exercise. I think they are right on this one. [Via]
