You know the bad habits we’re talking about. The ones that make it hard to stop—like eating a whole pint of ice cream, or spending your whole day on social media. The ones you know are unhealthy and bad for you, but they just feel so good while you’re doing them. We get it. We’ve all got our vices, and sometimes those vices are pretty hard to break. But if you really want to change your life for the better (and honestly, who doesn’t?), there are some things you can do that are actually proven to work. Here’s a few of the most common bad habits Americans want to kick but can’t:

We’re all human and prone to bad habits, but what separates us from the rest of the animal kingdom (and even robots) is our capacity for self-awareness. There are many things you can do to improve your life and make yourself more aware of how you spend your time—and that includes identifying those bad habits that you’ve been meaning to kick for a while. Here are the top ten American bad habits we’d like to see go away:

Try to be more centered and focused, and these habits will be easier to kick. One of the best ways to stop bad habits is by focusing on one thing at a time. Don’t try to change everything all at once, because you’re more likely to end up frustrated and give up altogether. Instead, make a plan for yourself and stick with it. You might try making an effort to eat healthier foods or exercise regularly, rather than trying to cut out soda cold turkey (which can lead people back into old habits). If you make small changes in your life, they’ll be easier for you—and eventually become second nature!

These are just some of the bad habits Americans want to kick. I’m sure there are many more that I didn’t list here.
