As kids of all ages go through their studies, they get to learn of all the great men in history who have contributed to the collective knowledge in science and technology we enjoy today… and they’re not getting the full picture.
It is an issue when kids get the impression in school that most —if not all— of humanity’s scientific achievements are attributed to white men. That’s not only a big lie, but it also alienates kids of different backgrounds and ethnicities by the fact that they can’t see themselves in such endeavors, therefore they don’t feel encouraged to pursue a career in STEM.
Here’s a list of 11 women in STEM that the IDRA suggested the Texas State Board of Education needs to include in their revision of the Science Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). Education is constantly changing, so it’s only right that it changes for the better.
These women have all had an important impact on society and achieved things that everyone should know. We can all agree that women of all backgrounds have always been an important part of humanity’s greatest achievements. It’s in everyone’s best interest to preserve a proper environment for any future Marie Curie, Gladys West, or Katherine Johnson to reach the best of their potential for the well-being of our collective future.
